Weather's been to cold and windy to ice fish for 2 straight weeks, had me going stir crazy looking at the forecast. Thursday finally warmed up to just below freezing, although the winds were gusting over 40 km/hour. We headed out for a few hours, just to get out of the office and onto the ice. I didn't bother bringing all the gear, just a few rods to jig with.
At around 1:30 PM, we met up with a friend that had already been there for hours, all he caught up until then was a small walleye on a tip up. We set up 4 rods, one with a 4 inch shiner, the other had a 2.5 inch shiner. 3rd rod had a 1/16 ounce jig with a 1.5 inch minnow, fourth rod had a small jigging rap. We fished for about 3 hours, not one bite! My friend with the tip ups ended up catching 3 perch, not even one managed to set off the tip up, he caught them when bringing in the lines when he was ready to leave.
I tried my new 8 inch manual auger for the first time. I was surprised at how fast it cuts throught the ice compared to a gas auger, but also at how much effort it takes to actually drill through the 20 inch thick ice with an auger of that diameter. I definitely won't be using it unless absolutely necessary.
The highlight of the day was a windsurfer taking advantage of perfect conditions (warm and windy), he hit speeds of about 40 KM per hour, he also managed to make some spectacular 10 foot jumps. I have never seen anyone do this on ice before, I was amazed at the speeds he managed going against the wind.
